The Issue:
The Lisbon Treaty’s reverberations will not alter the European Commission’s determination that understanding of nutrition will remain key in the promotion of healthy eating and lifestyle choices. As consumers become more cost-conscious and careful about food choices, they are also becoming more receptive to messages about improving their diet. But has the principle of self-regulation been effective or is further education needed to highlight the importance of healthy eating? What further options are available to Europe’s policymakers, and how effective are they likely to prove? The food and drink industry has made significant efforts to promote variety and choice for consumers, but what more can be done by both industry and policymakers?
