CIAA participates in European Business Summit
Mella Frewen, CIAA Director General recently participated in a high level panel discussion at the ninth European Business Summit. The event focussed on Europe’s place in the global economy, today and tomorrow –"Europe in the world: leading or lagging?” Mella Frewen spoke on the current difficulties of the commodity markets and issues relating to food security.

CIAA publishes its ‘Data & trends of the European Food and Drink Industry 2010’
The CIAA recently released its annual facts and figures report - “Data & trends of the European Food and Drink Industry 2010”. As one of Europe’s most diverse industries with over 310,000 companies and total revenue of €954 billion, this year’s report contains key statistics and provides a comprehensive picture of the structure and economics of the food and drink industry in the EU.

- The food and drink industry is the EU’s single largest manufacturing sector in terms of turnover and employment in the EU. The food and drink industry is second leading manufacturing sector in terms of value added (2%) and number of companies.
- 4.2 million people are employed by the industry directly. A stable 13.5% share in manufacturing in terms of employment makes the industry the leading employer in the EU.
- Significantly, small and medium -sized enterprises (SME’s) represent 99.1% of food and drink companies and generate almost half of industry turnover (48.2%), while directly employing 62.8% of the sector’s workforce.
- Medium sized companies represent only 3.6% of food and drink companies while contributing to 27% of the food and drink turnover and employing 25% of the workforce in the sector.
- The EU is the world’s largest exporter and importer in food and drink products worldwide. As such, the European food and drink industry exported products, worth €53.7 billion in 2009.

Industry stresses the importance of energy efficient technologies CIAA organised event at EU Sustainable Energy Week
The CIAA recently worked with Cogen Europe (European Cogeneration Sector), CEPI (European Paper Industry) and CEFIC (European Chemical Industry) to participate in the EU Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels. Speakers included high level Commission officials as well as MEPs. Paul Gardiner, Chair of the CIAA Climate Change Committee, spoke on behalf of the CIAA.

Food manufacturers call for a ‘common sense’ approach for consumers following key vote on food information
Following the recent European Parliament Environment Committee vote on the proposal on food information to consumers, the CIAA looks to the EU institutions to reach a balanced agreement in view of the proposal’s original aim, to combine and simplify existing legislation to improve consumer understanding.

CIAA regrets failure to reach agreement on Novel Foods
Novel foods have properties which bring benefits to consumers and contribute to healthier diets. A revised Novel Foods Regulation would have stimulated innovation in the food and drink industry and simplified the current regulatory framework both to facilitate market access for novel foods and encourage innovation and greater consumer choice.

New face in the CIAA Secretariat
Isabel Ortiz has been appointed Director of Consumer Information, Diet and Health at the CIAA. Prior to joining the CIAA on 14 March, she worked as a Policy Officer at DG Enterprise and Industry in the Food Industry Unit (European Commission).

CIAA calls for action on the Single Market Act
In response to the European Commission’s consultation on the Single Market Act (SMA), the CIAA prioritised ten key areas for action. The further development of the Single Market is essential to creating more prosperity and jobs throughout the EU.

European Parliament consent on EU-South Korea FTA welcomed
The CIAA welcomes the consent by the European Parliament to the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This marks significant progress towards better market access for European products and brings considerable gains to the European food and drink industry, and to Europe as a whole. In addition to improved market access, the FTA should offer greater protection to more than 160 European geographical indications (GIs) and set a clear precedent for future FTAs to be concluded by the EU.
CIAA welcomes EU-Japan commitment to proceed with FTA
The CIAA welcomes the commitments made at the EU-Japan summit on 28 May 2011. The two sides have agreed to undertake a scoping exercise with immediate effect and a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is now a clear objective for bilateral relations between the EU and Japan.
